11 Tips for Moving Home in Winter

Moving house can be stressful at the best of times, but it can be especially challenging during the winter months. Cold weather, shorter days, and potential snow and ice can all make the moving process more difficult. However, with a bit of planning and preparation, you can make your winter move go smoothly. Here are our 11 tips to help you stay organised and stay warm during your winter move:

1. Protect your items against the cold

One of the biggest challenges of moving in the winter is protecting your belongings from the cold. Make sure to wrap any delicate items, such as electronics or artwork, in blankets or bubble wrap to insulate them from the cold. It’s also a good idea to pack your boxes in the garage or a heated space, rather than leaving them outside in the cold.

2. Remember what you wear on moving day

It’s important to dress warmly and in layers on moving day. Wear boots or sturdy shoes with good traction to help prevent slips and falls on icy surfaces. It’s also a good idea to bring gloves, hats, and scarves to keep your hands and head warm while you’re loading and unloading the moving truck.

3. Take care of your pets

If you have pets, make sure to arrange for their care during the move. It’s best to keep them in a warm, secure place, away from the chaos of the move. If you’re driving a long distance with your pets, make sure to take breaks to let them stretch their legs and use the bathroom.

4. Monitor weather conditions and act accordingly

Keep an eye on the weather forecast in the days leading up to your move. If there is a winter storm forecasted, it might be necessary to reschedule your move or at least plan for extra time to account for potentially slower travel.

5. Add more time to your moving calendar

In the winter, it’s a good idea to add a bit of extra time to your moving calendar to account for potential delays. This could mean giving yourself an extra day to pack, or allowing extra time for the drive to your new home.

6. Find a reliable removal company

If you’re hiring a removal company to help with your move, make sure to choose one with a good track record and experience moving in the winter. A professional moving company will have the necessary equipment and experience to handle any winter weather conditions that might arise.

7. Essentials box

Pack a box of essentials that you’ll need on your first night in your new home. This could include things like towels, bedding, a flashlight, and any medications you might need.

8. Protect your belongings

In addition to protecting your items from the cold, it’s also important to protect them from damage during the move. Make sure to wrap any fragile items in bubble wrap or packing paper, and consider using furniture pads to protect your furniture.

9. Heating & utilities

Don’t forget to set up your heating and utilities in your new home before you move in. It’s a good idea to schedule a start date for your utilities a few days before your move to make sure everything is up and running when you arrive.

10. Clearing driveways/walkways

If you’re moving into a house with a driveway or walkway, make sure to clear any snow and ice before the moving truck arrives. This will make it easier for the movers to access your home and will help prevent accidents.

11. Have a backup plan

Finally, it’s always a good idea to have a backup plan in case something goes wrong on moving day.
